The Ribbon

Role: Art Direction, Layout Lead, BG Painting, Compositing
Tools: Photoshop, Toon Boom Harmony, After Effects

A little girl finds herself in a mysterious and magical land when she bumps into a friendly creature that helps guide her toward her greatest wish.

Due to this film currently being in production, I can only share a portion of my current work.

Art Direction

Ribbon's environment design is meant to have a balance between being magical while still being grounded in a place that's familiar.  The bright backgrounds of the other-worldly environment the girl occupies for most of the film contrasts sharply with the 'real world' we get to see later in the story.

An important part of the backgrounds is how the shape design and colors progress through the film.  Even though the magical world isn't dangerous for the little girl, there's still some sense of mystery and uneasiness that must be conveyed in the beginning.  The environment starts with more pointy shape design, and then becomes more bubbly as the girl explores.  The most extreme examples of this can be seen in the clouds and grass.

Though I've been able to work on some of the actual background artwork, the larger part of my role is guiding our team of background artists.   I'm responsible for managing our deadlines, running in-depth critique sessions, and providing training.
